Attracting new learners to study computer science

From the 25th to 28th of August 2023, JD, an intern at the Tech Hub, recently attended the Annual Ongwediva Trade Fair with a mission to showcase the fusion of culture and technology. Representing both the Tech Hub and the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) together with Dr Koch-Kapuire, JD presented two Virtual Reality (VR) applications developed in collaboration with the San people from the Donkerbos Community.

The first demo, “Hunting with the Ju/’hoansi in the Kalahari,” offered attendees an immersive experience into the traditional hunting practices of the San community through a co-created VR gesture application. The second demo, “Let’s dance /Hi//Ka//Kusi with non-player character Ju/’Hoansi women in Virtual Reality,” invited participants to engage with virtual Ju/’Hoansi women in a vibrant dance performance.

Beyond entertainment, these demonstrations served a higher purpose. They not only celebrated the cultural richness of the San community but also highlighted the transformative potential of VR technology in education. By showcasing these applications, JD aimed to ignite interest and curiosity among attendees, particularly in the field of computer science.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees expressing admiration for the seamless integration of technology and culture. Many were intrigued by the possibilities that VR technology offers in preserving and sharing cultural heritage while simultaneously advancing the frontiers of computer science.
