Pay community design workshop

March 16, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

About the workshop

The purpose of this workshop is to inspire and identify creative solutions to community social challenges. While welcoming different types of interventions in service and product design, the workshop will focus on developing civic technologies – technologies designed with social impact in mind. In addition to social impact, interventions will also focus on creating new economic value for communities. The workshop will follow an inclusive design approach of building with instead of for communities, with the rationale that community-led designs create more adaptive and reflective interventions. Given that the majority of Namibia’s population is under the age of 30, special focus is given to ideas that address youth challenges and that empower youth. The workshop will be hosted in a collaborative design format. In the first part of the workshop, participants will be given a general introduction to human-centered design, brainstorming, and creative problem solving. The second phase of the workshop will feature discussions around social challenges, a design challenge brief, group work and finally, a presentation of possible solutions to relevant social issues.

Target participants (70% female): Participants will be recruited as representative members of their respective communities. Favorable recruitment will be given to women/girls from marginalized background.

About ICTIH:

The Inclusive and Collaborative Technology Innovation Hub (ICTIH) is a research and development organization operating under the Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST). The hub was established with funding from the Finnish embassy with an expressed purpose of enabling innovations that contribute towards achieving national social development goals. An establishing mandate of the hub is also to recruit and capacitate young innovators, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. This is done through activities targeted at capacitating youth with entrepreneurial thinking and supporting youth-led concepts. We strongly believe in designing with users or potential users that community problems can only solved with the ingenuity of community members.
