IC Tech Hub’s VR at TransNamib Heritage week

18-24 September 2023, an intern at the Tech Hub, recently had the unique opportunity to participate in TransNamib’s Heritage Week, where he unveiled the potential of virtual reality (VR) in preserving and promoting cultural heritage in the era of digitlisation. With two groundbreaking VR applications, JD provided visitors with an immersive journey into the rich traditions of the San community.

The first application, “Hunting with the Ju/’hoansi in the Kalahari,” is a co-created VR gesture application that transports users to the vast expanses of the Kalahari Desert. Through interactive experiences, participants learn about traditional hunting techniques alongside the Ju/’hoansi people, gaining insight into their centuries-old practices in a deeply engaging manner.

The second application, titled “Let’s Dance /Hi//Ka//Kusi,” offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the world of San cultural practices. Featuring non-player character Ju/’hoansi women, this VR experience simulates traditional rituals and ceremonies with astonishing realism. Visitors not only observe but also have the opportunity to participate, learning the intricate movements and rhythms integral to San culture. Indeed, these VR applications serve as powerful tools for cultural preservation and education. By providing accessible and immersive experiences, they enable a wider audience to appreciate and engage with the traditions of the San community. 

Through these demonstrations, attendees were not only entertained but also enlightened, sparking conversations about the importance of safeguarding and celebrating Namibia’s diverse heritage.
